When your child begins to walk, the safety barrier quickly becomes necessary to block his access to risky places like stairs for example. But the choice of this barrier should not be taken lightly because there are a multitude of models. Here are our tips for choosing security.
Why a security barrier?
The safety barrier is installed when the child is six months old, or as soon as the child begins to crawl. The security barrier installed will be kept until the child's 24 months minimum. It is placed in all the places which lead to a potentially dangerous space. Thanks to the barrier, you will block access to the stairs (up and down), the corridor or the kitchen and the bathroom to avoid domestic accidents. You can also insulate a fireplace. You will be able to be much more serene when your child moves around the house and escapes your vigilance. If your child has a cot without bars, a barrier at the entrance to their room will prevent them from walking around the house at night if they wake up.
The criteria for a good safety barrier
For your safety barrier to be of good quality, it must have been subject to tests which prove that it meets the safety standards in force. Thus, we will always be sure to opt for a model with the safety standard NF EN 1930 indication which assures you of its quality. Then note that it is not recommended to use an accordion shaped barrier as it is not considered a security barrier but rather a barrier to prevent animals from accessing a space by example. Then, always take care with the spacing of the bars because your child could well have the idea to pass his head there and to get stuck. Prefer a reduced spacing and regular bars.
The different types of safety barriers
You will find many types of safety barriers. The simplest is a barrier to be fixed to the wall using a drill. Very solid, it finds its place at the top of a staircase for example and adapts to almost all opening widths. Others are fixed by pressure using suction cups which are adapted to openings less than 1.20m. Less solid, they can however have an automatic closure after your passage which guarantees good security. In terms of materials, you will find wooden or metal models which both present a serious guarantee of security due to their robustness. When choosing your barrier, also consider the opening system that will best suit your situation. The fixed barriers open either to the right or to the left or have a gate that will allow you to open a single part. During your purchase, check the dimensions carefully so that the opening system adapts well to your layout.
